Attacking

Goal

An offensive player who either kicks or heads the ball into the goal is awarded a goal.

Assist

An assist is not necessarily credited to a player who makes a pass before a goal. There should be a conscious effort on the part of the passer to find an open player for a shot or to help a player work free for a shot.

Shot

A shot is an attempt that is taken with the intent of scoring and is directed toward the goal.

Shot: On Target

A shot on goal is a shot that is on the net. The results of a shot on goal must be either a save by the goalkeeper or defending team or a goal by the attacking team.

Shot: Off Target

A shot that hits the post or crossbar, (or is wide or above the goal) without being deflected by a goalkeeper or defender and does not cross the goal line is not a shot on goal.

Cross

A cross is a long kick from a wide position into the penalty area in front of the goal. The intent of a cross is to set up a scoring opportunity for an attacking player

Things to Note:

  • Due to video angle/quality shots, goals or assists may be tagged as “unknown athletes”.
  • The player who took the initial shot (even if a teammate or a defensive player “accidentally” deflected the ball in) is still awarded the shot.
  • Assists are subjective tags and may not be consistent with the coach’s definition.
  • A cross or crossing pass is not considered a shot.

Defense

Blocked Shots

A blocked shot is awarded to a defensive player who stops the shot that would have otherwise gone into the goal.

Saved Shots

A save is awarded to a goalkeeper only if a shot otherwise would have gone into the goal. A goalkeeper can be credited with a save without catching the ball. If the goalkeeper blocks the ball or punches it wide or over the goal, that goalkeeper can be credited with a save, provided the ball would have otherwise gone into the goal.

Goalkeeping

Goalkeeper Punts

A ball kicked by the goalkeeper out of their hands (dropkick), after the goalkeeper picks up the ball.

Goalkeeper Throws

A pass by the goalkeeper where the ball is thrown by hand. A throw can be made with one or two hands. A throw can be an overhand throw or underhand roll/throw.

Things to Note:

  • Blocked and Saved shots are recorded for the team only.
  • A cross ball that was meant as a pass but stopped by the goalie, otherwise entering the goal, will be counted as a save.
  • Defensive stats are tracked at the team level only.

Possessions

Time of Possession

Time of possession is defined as the total amount of time a team possesses the ball.

Count of Possession

The number of possessions is defined as the total amount of times a team possesses the ball.

Count of Transition

Count of Transition is the count of how many times a team regains possession of the ball.

Possession Percentage

Possession Percentage is the percentage of the total time of possession.

Things to Note:

  • This can be subjective due to camera angle/quality and speed/level of play.
  • During any loose ball situation, maintain possession with the original team that had possession until the opponent gains clear control of the ball.
  • Possessions are tracked at the team level only.

Infringements

Offsides

A player is in an offside position if he or she is nearer to the opponent’s end line than the ball, unless:

  • The player is in his or her own half of the field of play (including the halfway line)
  • The player is not closer to the opponent’s end line than at least two opponents.
Fouls

When a player/team is in violation of the rules against their opponent. This can lead to; a free kick, penalty kick, and potential removal of a player in violation of rules.

Things to Note:

  • Fouls are not documented, specifically, in the NCAA statisticians manual or rules.
  • Due to video angle/quality, offsides and fouls may be missed.
  • Infringements are tracked at the team level only.

Set Pieces

Corner Kicks

A corner kick is taken by a member of the attacking team when the ball passes completely over the end line, either in the air or on the ground, having last been played by a member of the defending team.

Free Kicks

A free-kick is taken to resume play after play has been stopped by the referee. The kick is taken by a member of the team against which the offense is committed and is taken from the point where the infraction occurred.

Penalty Kicks

A penalty kick is awarded for any infringement of the rules by the defending team within the penalty area that is penalized by a direct free kick. The ball must be in play when the infringement is committed in order for a penalty kick to be awarded.

Throw-Ins

A throw-in is taken to put the ball back into play after it has passed completely over a touch line, either on the ground or in the air.

Things to Note:

  • Set Pieces are tracked at the team level only.
  • Due to video angle/quality set pieces may be missed.
  • Indoor soccer games that restart with a “pass in” will still be marked as a throw-in.
